Cannery District
A large multi-year mixed-use commercial project, the Cannery District required a coordinated effort between Valley of the Flowers Landscaping and the construction and design teams. We collaborated with Linda Iverson Landscape Design to focus on creating inviting outdoor spaces using regionally appropriate plantings, clean lines, and durable materials suited to Montana’s climate.
Client Goals
The Cannery District redefines what commercial landscaping can be with an immersive, plant-forward design that showcases native plants and water conservation. Valley of the Flowers Landscaping is proud to have helped bring this bold vision to life—transforming the former blighted industrial property into a vibrant, welcoming destination driven by an outdoor environment people want to experience and return to.
Design Approach
Working with Design 5 Landscape Architecture and Linda Iverson Landscape Design over the course of 5 seasons was a tremendous learning experience. Since inception, Valley of the Flowers Landscaping has nurtured the growth of the extensive plantings through a strong landscape maintenance program.
Innovations & Philosophy
The use of native and drought-tolerant plants in the Cannery District is a bellwether for what can be done in a water-starved West. Six bioswales gather and filter water from parking lot runoff. Adapted shade trees provide shelter and help to reduce the urban heat-island effect. Drought tolerant lawns provide outdoor recreation areas with minimal water use. Native wildflowers provide pollinator-friendly beauty that celebrates Montana in all seasons.
